“Shelter 42”
Attached are a couple of photos that I was hoping anyone could help me out with.
The first photo is of my grandfather (right) and an unknown soldier. This photo always stayed with my grandfathers special personal effects (paybook, medals etc.) from the war. I’m wondering if this unknown soldier is my grandfather’s best friend who was killed on Blue Beach? I’d really like to identify him as this is the only photo that was kept with my grandfathers important items from the war. All other photos have been found in random photo boxes mixed in with other photos.
The second photo is of another elderly unknown soldier in the same location as the first photo (Shelter 42). I’m not sure if these photos were taken in front of an H Hut in Canada or the UK, maybe Aldershot? It’s interesting to note that the location of the “Shelter 42” sign has changed slightly from one photo to the other.
I was wondering if from all your research you’ve maybe stumbled across some other photos that may tell a bit more of the story behind these photos. Below is what I’m personally interested in.
1. Identify the unknown soldiers in photo 1 and 2. Features that I feel may help is that the soldier in photo 1 appears to be a really big guy. My grandfather was a fairly decent size and this soldier is quite a bit taller and heavier set. I’m assuming the soldier in photo 2 is a First World War vet and due to his age he may be more recognizable than most of the other young soldiers.
2. Location of where these photos were taken?
Thanks again for the help. I hope these are of interest to you as well.
